  STAFFING INDUSTRY OUTLOOK 2026

Staffing industry outlook 2026
Stephen Dwyer, CEO of the ASA

This piece was inspired by insights shared by Stephen Dwyer, President and CEO of the American Staffing Association, in a recent industry briefing for staffing firms nationwide. Lloyd Staffing is a longstanding member of the American Staffing Association and adheres to its commitment to promoting high standards of legal, ethical, and professional practice across the staffing industry. Learn more about ASA’s standards at their website.  Lloyd’s recruiters are nationally certified staffing professionals (CSP).

Every few years, something shifts big enough that the old hiring playbook stops working. The info provided in these staffing industry trends for 2026 is exactly that kind of shift — and if you’re the one making hiring decisions, a few of them are worth adjusting your strategy around now.

Your Hiring Decisions Are Probably Taking Longer Than They Used To – Here’s Why

If it feels harder to get a hire approved than it did a couple of years ago, you’re not imagining it. Budgets get a second look. Approvals stack up. A role that used to get filled in two weeks now sits open for six.

The real cost isn’t the delay itself — it’s what happens while the seat sits empty. Lost productivity, strained teams, stalled projects. It rarely shows up as its own line item, which is exactly why it’s easy to underestimate.

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth putting an actual number on what an open seat is costing you per week, not just treating “still searching” as a neutral state. A staffing partner who can move quickly the moment you’re ready is often the difference between a six-week gap and a six-day one.

Building Recruiting In-House Looks Cheaper. It Often Isn’t.

Direct sourcing risks deserve careful consideration

A lot of companies are tempted to pull hiring fully in-house to cut out agency fees. On paper, that looks like smart cost-cutting. In practice,  the direct sourcing risks tend to outweigh the savings.

When you build recruiting in-house, you also absorb everything a specialist used to handle: compliance exposure, misclassification errors, and the sheer time cost of screening and onboarding. And the legal environment right now doesn’t forgive amateur mistakes — Form I-9 audits are up sharply and penalties have gotten steeper (more on that in our companion piece on hiring compliance).

None of this means DIY recruiting is always the wrong call. It means the direct sourcing risks deserve a real cost comparison against the fee you’re trying to avoid — not just a glance at the invoice.

Is AI Actually Going to Replace Your Recruiters?   Not According to the Data!

It’s the question on everyone’s mind. According to ASA’s research, AI in hiring is not, so far, functioning as the job killer many predicted. What it’s actually doing is absorbing the commoditized parts of the process — resume screening, scheduling, initial outreach — the repetitive tasks that used to eat up a recruiter’s day.

AI in Hiring

That leaves more room, not less, for the human judgment that determines whether a hire actually works out: reading between the lines of a resume, sensing whether someone will fit your team’s culture, negotiating an offer that gets a candidate to say yes instead of ghosting. AI in hiring hasn’t replaced that work — if anything, it’s made it more valuable, because it’s the part of the process that’s hardest to automate and easiest to notice when it’s missing.

What This Means to Employers

If you’re evaluating staffing partners right now, don’t let price be the only filter. Look for a partner who’s willing to be woven into your broader workforce strategy — the one you call before a hiring plan falls apart, not after. Look for one that understands the real cost of a slow decision, can tell you honestly when direct sourcing risks aren’t worth it, and uses AI in hiring to free up better judgment rather than replace it.

That combination — speed, honesty about risk, and technology used well — is what separates a real staffing partner from a vendor you call when you’re desperate.
